Career Consulting for Researchers
She had twelve publications and zero interview invitations. The problem sat on page one of her resume. We see a version of this story every week. Axe Talent is a boutique headhunting and career consultancy in Singapore. We present researchers to universities and industry R&D teams for a living, and since 2021 we have placed over 300 candidates across 18 countries. This page explains what a career consultant for researchers actually does, and how to tell a good one from a coach with a template.
The ninety-second read
Hiring panels give a resume about ninety seconds on the first pass. We sit across the table from those panels, so we watch how the seconds get spent. The eyes go to publications and where they landed. Then grants, and specifically grants held as principal investigator. Then PhD students supervised to completion. Then teaching. Everything else waits for the second read, and most resumes never earn a second read.
Here is what that means in practice. We watched a school head pass on a strong candidate because the evidence of leadership had been trimmed to page nine. We have seen panels count only Q1 and Q2 journals and quietly skip everything below. We have seen a candidate's certificates parked in the education section, where a screener read them as degree inflation. Each of these was fixable in an afternoon. Each of them cost an interview first.
What a research career consultant actually does
A consultant who knows academic hiring works on four layers, in this order.
- Strategy first. Where your profile wins today, where it will win in two years, and what specifically stands between the two. Academia to industry, industry back to academia, or the next rung of the academic ladder. This is a map with dates, target institutions, and the two or three metrics you need to move.
- The research profile, read the panel's way. Publications with venue quality. Citation trajectory, because panels reward a rising curve. The h-index with its source named, since Scopus and Google Scholar routinely disagree by wide margins. Grants as principal investigator, counted separately from everything else. Students supervised as main supervisor. We put your numbers next to what real hiring bars look like and tell you exactly where you clear them.
- The resume itself. Structured in the order panels screen, with every publication listed and the strongest evidence on page one. Region matters here: US, EU, UK, APAC, and MENA committees expect different formats, different lengths, and different treatment of grants and teaching. A resume that looks complete in one region reads as thin in another.
- Interviews. Academic panels mix professors, HR, and administrators. Each group scores different things. We prepare you for the questions each of them actually asks, from research vision to student numbers to why this university.
Why we know what panels want
We recruit for those panels. Our team runs retained searches for universities and for industry research teams, which means we read hiring feedback on real candidates every week. We know why the last shortlist skipped a candidate with better publications, and we know which line in a resume made a dean stop scrolling. Career advice built on that feedback loop looks very different from advice built on a formatting guide.
Natalia Rostova has run her own technical recruitment agency since 2021, first from Ukraine and, since 2023, from Singapore as Axe Talent. In 2022 that work included recruiting cleared engineers for BAE Systems programs in the US. Today she runs the firm under Ministry of Manpower licence 23S2064, and the consulting practice grew directly out of watching brilliant researchers lose interviews for fixable reasons.
Our own AI tools do the heavy lifting
We are the first AI-native agency recruiting researchers for universities and industry with its own AI tools. Our Axe Builder, the resume builder for researchers, pulls your publications, citations, and journal rankings from scientific databases through your ORCID and formats everything the way university HR screens it. Importing two hundred publications takes about thirty seconds. Formatting them by hand takes an evening. You can try the builder for free, and our consulting builds on top of what it produces.
Who this is for
- Postdocs and early-career PhDs deciding between a faculty track and industry, usually while juggling dozens of open applications.
- Associate professors and professors weighing an international move, where visa rules, family logistics, and grant portability decide as much as the science does.
- Researchers leaving academia who need their record translated into what an R&D team screens for. We run searches for those teams, so we know the translation.
- Cleared engineers and defense researchers repositioning into the private sector after years inside programs they can only partially describe.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find a career consultant for researchers?
Ask one question first: does this consultant place researchers, or only advise them? A consultancy that runs live searches sees hiring decisions every week and prices its advice against real outcomes. Axe Talent does both, from Singapore, working globally.
Do you work with researchers outside Singapore?
Yes. Our placements cover 18 countries and the consulting runs remotely. Region-specific resume formats for US, EU, UK, APAC, and MENA hiring are part of the service.
Can you help me move from academia to industry?
Yes, and it is the most common request we get. We translate a research profile into what industry R&D teams screen for, and we run searches for those teams ourselves.
What does it cost?
It depends on scope, from a single profile review to full support through an international move. Email us and you get a concrete quote after the first call, before any commitment.
What should I prepare before contacting you?
Your current resume, your ORCID if you have one, and an honest sentence about the job you want. That is enough for us to give you a useful first read.
