How long does it take to fill a Professor of Computer Science position in Malaysia?

It took under four months. On 25 June 2026, a top private university in Malaysia opened a search for a Professor in Computer Science and retained Axe Talent to run it. On 14 October, the candidate the university wanted accepted its verbal offer, and this is how that search looked from the inside.

What a professorial search looks like from the inside: seven candidates, two offers, one yes

Seven candidates were presented to the university, two reached the offer stage, and one has accepted, while one more is still interviewing. The first conversation with the successful candidate took place in mid-July, his final on-campus interview with the university’s senior leadership was on 6 October, and he accepted the verbal offer eight days later. For anyone asking how long an academic executive search takes, that is the answer for a professorial chair in Malaysia when the job requirements are written in numbers and the agency reads them: under four months.

Recruiting a full professor from a public university

The candidate is an associate professor and department head at a public research university in Malaysia. His research runs through human–computer interaction, educational technology, serious games and immersive learning in augmented and virtual reality. His Scopus h-index is approaching 30 and his Google Scholar h-index is above 30, he has supervised eleven PhD students to completion as main supervisor, and he holds granted patents. He now steps up from associate professor to full professor, which is the step this search was opened to make.

Can a public-university academic move to a private university?

Yes, and the record a public-university career in Malaysia builds is the record a private university’s professorial bar asks for: Q1 and Q2 publications over five years, external grants as principal investigator, PhD students supervised to completion as main supervisor, and a Scopus h-index with its source named. A candidate who clears that bar with room to spare is, more often than not, ready for the title his current institution has not yet offered. Building that bridge is the work Axe Talent was retained to do here.

How an AI-native agency runs an academic search

The search began in the publication databases, where we mapped the field before a single CV arrived. Our screening runs as code, and every candidate on the longlist was checked against the university’s own job requirements before anyone was approached. The candidates we presented arrived with a resume built in Axe Builder, our resume builder for researchers, which turns an ORCID iD into an academic resume with citations, h-index, journal quartiles and Crossref data already in place, laid out in the order the hiring panel reads it. Before each interview round the candidate received a preparation guide written for that university’s panel. We run the same method for an associate professorship, a chair or a head of research strategy.

How to hire a professor in Malaysia, and how to be hired

A dean or a vice-chancellor choosing an agency for a professorial search judges it on the shortlist and on the start date, and the search above is our evidence for both. A twenty-minute calibration call on Natalia’s Calendar covers the research area, the level, the publication bar, the budget and any visa constraints, and it ends with a straight read on whether the search is realistic at your budget. A professor reading this will find the searches we are recruiting for now under Clients and Roles on the news page, and a note to natalia@axetalent.com with a CV is enough to start.

To the candidate at the centre of this story, we offer our congratulations, and we are excited for the chapter that began with his acceptance on 14 October.
